From 1969-1974 Judy Chicago created a series of outdoor performances, titled Atmospheres. These works placed colored smoke within a range of environments, from the beach to building rooftops to the desert, each designed to enhance and interact with their specific site. Chicago revisited pyrotechnics as a medium again in 2012 and has continued ever since to design new “Smoke Sculptures” at sites around the world. In addition to these fireworks performances, Chicago has also employed dry ice in such works as Be No More, and with Feather Room used mounds of feathers to disappear the surrounding architecture and create new environments, each tailored to their particular location.
